The Children's Manifesto

The Author Elise Mc Millen

1. We should be able to vote because children are people too. Voting allows you to pick the president, pick the governor and I think kids are aware of politics. If we were given the right to vote we would become more aware of politics. If kids were allowed to vote now, they would be inspired to lead this country.

2.  Clubs like the YMCA shouldn't be able to keep kids out. Like at the YMCA there is a women's locker room and no kids can go in there. Guess what? There is a sauna, a spa and hot tub, and in the kids locker room there are none of those things. In the kids locker room there are just showers, sinks and lockers.

3. Kids should be able to walk down the street to the nearest store or the nearest post office. Parents need to calm down and let kids play. Parents know that its safe for their kids but they don't want to take the risk. I think every single little risk puts a little experience in you, so when you go out into the world without your parents you are not totally lost.

4. Kids deserve the same bathroom as adults at school. The staff bathrooms at school are always so clean. The kids bathroom is trashed. Its almost like the custodians don't clean the toilet paper on the ceiling or inch of dirt beneath the stalls because they figure its just going to get dirty anyway.

5. In conversations between kids and adults, adults usually don't take the kids seriously and they say, "yep you are right". It just gets annoying. Once I was at a talk at MOCA and I asked a question, the artists didn't take me seriously and said, "yep you are right". So please take us more seriously, seriously.

  1. This is all very true Elise, children need more access to participate in public space. It is ridiculous the way that our country "protects" children by denying them access to adult bathrooms, or adult conversation, while simultaneously it frequently fails to provide many of them with the things they need to thrive (adequate health care, food, parks, clean air etc.) Thank you for sharing your observations.
